We were on a rainy day road trip to get the best truffle pasta in Istria.
Looking on the map, up in a corner of Istria was a little village that sounded fun:
Hum.
So we went, for no other reason.
And we found a charming little plave.
After our pasta lunch in Momjan, we drove past Buje, past Grožnjan (we stayed here in 2012 - I would recommend it to you) and Motovun, through Buzet and Roč to the "World's smallest town" of Hum. A church, a couple houses, some gift shops and that's it. There are a few rooms for rent, and one restaurant so you could stay. One of the gift stores has a coffee machine, all coffees are 10Kuna.
Hum is really cute and interesting. The houses are addressed simply by number. No street names because there really are no streets to speak of. So you might live at 8 Hum, Croatia.
Hum was built by giants who used rocks left over after the other towns were built.
Or, maybe it was built in the 11th century when a castle was built.
Anyway, it is the world's smallest official town because they actually have a mayor and administrative office.
The other thing of note is that it is the center of the Glagoljica language, the oldest known Slavic language. See the link here.
I actually think this would be a fun place to spend a night. A good center for exploring the area.
Anyway, you have to want to come here, and not many people do, so the prices in the gift stores were outstanding.
This is where I learned about the Mistletoe Grappa, because back at the Konoba I thought I was hearing it wrong.
I tasted truffle wine.
YUCK!
Bad combo.
I bought fresh truffles here, for great prices (especially compared to the US).
Now I just have to get them home.
Hummmmmm.
