Beach Day!
Up late and we walked into town for a very unusual breakfast. Unusual for this trip I mean. We had eggs.
We ate at Meu Limão. They had about the brightest orange yolks I have seen since back when we raised chickens in our backyard. These were some fresh eggs. And the orange juice... neon orange.
The biggest challenge today was deciding which beach to hang out on. There are so many choices, right in town and just outside, within walking distance. So we sampled a few beaches yesterday, and decided to spend our time today on Praia da Batata.
Tata beach, as I liked to call it.
Actually, every beach in Portugal, and Spain, is Tata beach, so no big deal. But we thought it was a good mix: close in, with a bar on the sand, a rocky area to explore and a wide sandy beach to just lay on. You can see part of the fort from the beach, so you are actually doing historical, touristy things while relaxing, and for entertainment there is the mouth of the harbor, in case you get tired of people watching.
Actually, there was a lot more to Batata beach than we first thought.
We got down to the sand, and set up near the cliff in the dangerous "rock fall zone" so all our friends at home will have something more to worry about us. I set off to explore between the rocks, and winding my way through to the next beach I cam upon a tunnel.
I had to climb up a little to get into it, but no big deal. It lead to another, smaller hidden beach in a cove. And at the other end of the rocky crescent was...
Another tunnel, leading to yet a third hidden beach.
This was getting cool. Each beach was a little less busy, a little smaller and quieter.
There were four tunnels all told, then a fifth that was half under water, and I waded waist deep through it to see the next, big beach over, which I think was Pinhão.
Anyway, it was pretty fun to explore.
But, we had a great spot where we were, so we just stayed put and relaxed a few hours.
Boy, it was a hot day. No breeze at all.
About three hours later we had run out of drinks, and we thought it might be nice to return to our apartment and use the pool. We have had only two other pools this trip, and we have a refrigerator so...
We headed home, bought some cold beer, and hung out at the pool for the rest of the day.
And that is about it for the day in Lagos.
Except for dinner. Why change a great thing? We returned to Meu Limão for another fantastic meal and wine, the best wine I have had on the whole trip. Nels and Christine, if you are reading this, it was almost as good as yours, but not quite as "intoxicating." But really good. It is called Gáudio, and the wine notes are in the photos. Gail had the white wine by them and liked that as well.
After dinner we walked the town till after dark.
All in all, a rewarding day.
Think about it:
A little local history (seeing the fort from the beach), local exploration (the tunnels), local cuisine (beer and wine), and culture.
Yup.
A good day.
