We spent three nights in Beynac et Cazenac.
There are a couple Beynacs in France, the "et Cazenac" tells you which one we are at. We are on the banks of the Dordogne River.
Beynac is a small village, that climbs steeply up a cliff. There is a castle on top, the walls go straight up from the edge of the cliff, giving it the illusion of being even taller and ready to crash down on us at any time.
It is awesome to look at.
We were here in 2009.
I remember the good food in this region. We returned because of that food, and because of the beauty of the region, and because there are things to see that we missed the first time, like the caves.
We are staying in the same hotel, the Hotel du Chateau.
Not a great choice.
The room has a great deck overlooking the Dordogne river. The room itself is crappy: very dated and worn out, not updated at all since our last visit eight years ago. And the great food at the restaurant? Pass.
It is sad to see the decline.
But, the deck was a great place to hang out and eat dinner the last night.
On Monday, it is market day in the little town parking lot. We walked over and Gail got a couple things.
There is a lady at the top of the town who makes foie gras the old way. I wanted to go see her, and buy some. Unfortunately she is getting very old and does not take people in to visit except maybe once a week or two. But, I met her daughter, and bought some from her.
Every day we went for coffee and fresh orange juice at the Tabac/Bar. We climbed up to the castle and walked around, and walked down along the river. Mostly we used this as a base to explore for two days: to the caves, and then a road trip to see the French villages.
