It is not her kind of hike, but I really enjoyed myself.
We walked out of the upper end of Leukerbad, along a road to a dirt trail, and saw the source of the hot spring water that feeds the thermal spas here. The water comes out at 51°C (about 127°F).
*Here is a secret for you: at this point on the trail, there is a sign that points left and right. Left is Thermalquellen 7, right is Thermalquellen 4. Go left, down a small hill for 100 feet. Look over the edge, and you will see the water pipe with very hot water flowing out of it (see photos).
Now... look below the pipe, above the river. Look close. See the man-made rock pool?
You should know what to do next.
Then we walked up into the narrow and steep Dala Gorge, with its waterfalls, rounded rock hollows, narrow canyon and metal walkways tacked on the sides of the cliffs.
That is the part that got Gail. The walkways.
Up on the sheer canyon walls.
With lots of air below your feet.
Three miles worth.
The river corkscrewed around, and dropped about 60 feet into a pool. There was a small rainbow in the mist.
I always say, nothing like a good cold German weissebier in a little mountain cafe at the end of a hike. And so I coaxed her through the most exposed areas and we ended up at a little cafe, in a meadow, surrounded by cows with clanking bells.
Restaurant Buljes it is called, a cute, red umbrella, wooden tables hut since 1955. Eventually we decided to walk back down to Leukerbad.
Here is information on the hike. ONE TWO
