I really like the motto for Whispering Oaks Vineyard: Not just a taste, an experience. So, we decided to head over on Saturday for the experience. The tasting room is simple, with your choice of indoor or outdoor seating. We chose to sit outdoors, soaking up the late winter sun and view of the rolling hillside dotted with oak trees, whispering in the breeze. The tasting fee was $5, for four pours. In addition, Aaron generously gave us a complimentary extra pour of the "Sweet Petite" Petite Sirah dessert wine. The steel fermented Chardonnay turned out to be the best wine of the day... and I am not a chard fan. What I am saying is that three of the four of us like the chardonnay the best, but did not think it was great. Of the reds, the Cabernet was the best, but we didn't buy any. All the wines seemed to be too smooth, too subtle for our tastes. No complexity. No big bold explosion up front, no long, lingering finish. The oak was too subdued for me, the smell too mild. Kind of an off taste in the wine. Wine preference is such a personal thing. It is hard to describe, but maybe I am spoiled by some of the other, more fruit forward, explosive wines we have tasted recently. As I looked at the bottle prices, I just thought the price point verses taste and potential aging did not work for me. So, for me, the taste just wasn't there, but it was a nice experience. |
