We have been here a couple times, and it is a very restful, rustic place. There is the lodge with a main room and about eight rooms upstairs, a couple cabins and duplexes scattered here and there, and a full sized pool fed by water from the hot springs. The pool is kept about 100 degrees during the day, and 105 at night.
We go there to hike and read. No cell service, no WiFi, just relaxing. There is electricity in the lodge (our first couple trips they didn't have electricity) but the cabins still use oil lamps. Great hikes include Devil's Kitchen, a geothermal area, and Boiling Springs Lake, the largest hot lake in the world. There is a steam vent called Terminal Geyser (not a geyser) and Drake Lake.
Dream Lake was beautiful, surrounded by trees with a small dock and canoe, but the water has been drained and the mud is becoming a meadow. The lake is but a dream.
They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the food is great. Good wine is reasonably priced. We usually take our own, so we can sit on the porch and read and drink the afternoon away. The Pacific Crest Trail runs through about a quarter mile down the road, and leads up to the main part of Lassen Park. Most times we have been there, the lodge has been staffed by European students, with a nice mix of international travelers.
On this trip we were welcomed into a group of friends: Buddy, Holly, Pat and Marge. (Pat and Marge have since come to visit.) We had a great time relaxing, sharing stories and drinking.
Late at night is the best time to hit the hot pool. They turn off the lights about 10PM, and the night swimming under the stars, au naturale, is divine. I woke early and hit the pool again just before sun up.
This is a great two or three day trip.
