Souvenir (French) is an object a person acquires for the memory associated with it. The term brings to mind the mass-produced crap that is the main commodity of tourist-trap gift shops. But, a souvenir can be any object, memento, or keepsake that can be collected and transported home by the traveler. The thing itself has no real significance other than the psychological connection with the object as a symbol of past experience. Without the owner's input, the object's meaning may be invisible, or cannot be articulated. These are my Souvenirs:
I always save one of the firewood permits to use as a bookmark, but leave the rest stapled to the logs. Last year they were red, next year maybe yellow or green. This year the mourning doves seemed to like the blue tags, and decided to nest in our woodpile. Three months later... May, August 2012

This is cool. I like using the tags as bookmarks. Because I like to use public transportation, I keep a stack of train tickets and bus transfers for the same purpose. Great mementoes.

Funny thing, I too keep the train stubs and business cards I get on trips. I also use them to write out those daily lists of stuff to do...
